Our Story
Head Above Water was founded with one central mission in mind: creating memories that will last a lifetime. We bring together participants from all walks of life for meaningful experiences year after year. Our immersive programs provide unique opportunities for personal growth and development, but always leave room for plenty of fun. Joyah Watkins
Executive Director
Joyah Watkins leads Head Above Water - Saving Life Below with experience and passion. Joyah is an ecologist and environmental justice advocate at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. A graduate of the University North Carolina Charlotte, Biology B.A, she is currently pursuing graduate studies in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, (EEB), where she specializes in coral reef ecology and microbiome research. Joyah is highly passionate about increasing the representation of minorities in ecology and marine biology.
Christopher Watkins
Director of Operations
Christopher has a strong passion for diversity and inclusion, and community building. This includes mentoring youth in personal and professional development, teaching financial investment practices, and economic development. Christopher graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University; Political Science, B.A, University of North Carolina Greensboro; Public Affairs, MPA. Paying it forward and serving his community is essential principles he strives daily to achieve.
